Enhancing Accessibility of Mass Transportation in Metropolitan Taipei by Formulating a Portable Personal Electric Vehicle

ABSTRACT
Walking access to transit drops dramatically with distance from transit stations, In order to increase access to locations that are not accessible by mass transportation, this study attempts to enhance the future role of personal electric vehicle (PEV).
Firstly, literature research was undertaken on daily journey patterns of Taipei metropolitan population and study of existing personal electric vehicles was carried out, in which existing PEVs were categorized. Secondly, analysis to PEVs cruising speed, riding posture, and vehicle weight was undertaken, according to the investigating scenarios and usability requirement.
The results:Distance to get to MRT stations is between 0.4-3km for Taipei commuters. Thus, the advised speed of PEVs is 5-15km/hr, with an average riding time of 4.8-12 minutes. Proper vehicle weight is suggested between 10-40kg. A light-weighted and easy-carry PEVs is proposed to fulfill residents’ needs of short-distance transport for access to public transport. As for riding postures, for faster rides, it is suggested to apply standing or semi-seated riding postures. Users of semi-seated PEVs can change their riding postures at will.
An ideal PEV for accessing to transit is characterized by less cruising range, low speed and flexible riding posture. A light-weighted PEV provides commuters with lower cost and, most importantly, portability in the MRT environment.

The Character of Pulp Molded and It’s Application on Sustainable Product Design

ABSTRACT
The design of sustaining product serves as means of the integration and employment of resources in relation to people, things and environment, that is, the mutual application between the way of recycling and repetitive use of the pulp molded material, which thinking method for design is rarely applied for sustaining product around the country in reality. Through the case study on the subject referred to domestic and exterior materials, used it as the design structure of creativity, and applied it to production. What follows are the main purposes of the work: (1) Application of the characteristic of the pulp molded industrial material for a change of the wasteful pattern known as easy-to-abandon; (2) By means of the principle of sustaining product design induced from the said reference, the raise of value for the transformation of environmental materials to consumer products, as well as industrial products; and (3) Effective transformation of the said materials after recycling for repetitive use, the thinking method of design being employed, to else nutrition, object, or product, or return of ecological nutrition, upon the termination of life span of product.

To Facilitate Short Throw Projector for Home and Personal Environment

ABSTRACT
The projector is widely used in business market, and so is in education market. However, very little families use projector for home entertainment due to difficulties of installation and space arrangement. The short - throw project can present large screen at a shorter distance, which provides users with flexibility of space arrangement.
Three typical scenarios were defined to simulate man-machine interaction in family environment. They are: (1) leisure space and bright environment. (2) high quality video environment. (3) activity space. with virtual reality effect . Field observation was carried out to analyze the optimal scenario planning.
Three interior designers were interviewed for evaluating the feasibility of planning scenarios. The applicability of short-throw projector in family environment is confirmed with following features: (1) better connectivity with related products, (2) less noise and heat interference, and (3) flexibility of space arrangement. Finally, a team of six industrial designers base on the scenario planning developed a list of design specification for future short-throw projector: (1) conveniently portable; (2) stand up style; (3) place connectors on the front panel; (4) nicely designed back panel with pilot lamps.

Explore Feasibility of Portable Folding Bicycle in MRT Journey

ABSTRACT
The policies of advanced countries encourage people to take Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) for energy saving and carbon reduction. However, MRT couldn’t satisfy a door to door journey. Therefore, personal light-duty vehicles are promoted for extended MRT journey. There are a few related but embryo personal vehicles developed. This study takes folding bicycles as sample to examine the feasibility of carrying them in Taipei MRT environment. The suitable measures of folded bicycle weight and dimensions were analyzed and then, three modes of carrying bicycle were defined: including hand-shoulder carrying, hold-pushing carrying, horizontal-pushing carrying.
Field experiments were carried on, followed by interviews to correspondents and MRT passengers. The results;
1. The mode of Horizontal-Pushing carrying was considered as the most acceptable mode of carrying a folded bicycle in MRT environment with no affection of bicycle weight.
2. To avoid disturbing other MRT passengers, the acceptable dimensions of the folded bicycle favor to height than other dimensions of length and width. Which means, a slim and tall folded bicycle is suggested in MRT environment.

Operation Efficiency Evaluation of the Pop-Up Pie Me

Pop-up menus enable more efficient interface operation. However, a variety of functions induce great complexity to the interface operation so that users require much cognitive effort in searching the target menu item. Many research proposed evaluated methods. Pie menus are purposed for improving usability. However, no previous research studied the influence of the item length, boldface and human’s physical characteristics of visual search (Shneiderman, 1988; Feng & Shen, 2006; Moyle, 2001) and mouse movement (Moyle, 2001; Donker & Reitsma, 2005; Whisenand et al., 1999). This study examined these factors and proposed Elliptic-Pie Menu and then conducted experiments. The study revealed: (1) Menu type was a significant factor of the operation efficiency; (2) Linear Menu presented the highest efficient dominated by users’ operation experiences, whereas Circular-Pie Menu had the lowest error rate; (3) Boldface first letter increased efficiency; (4) Elliptic-Pie Menu has significant improvement of efficiency with the assistant of short items especially with boldface first letter; (5) Visual search was the major cause of cognitive effort.

Enhancing the Layout of Public Rental Apartment through Universal Design Application

ABSTRACT :
Humanity Care is the core value of universal design that satisfies physical, mental and spiritual needs of all age groups.
The project is initiated by the barrier free plan of "Talungtung Public Housing Program" of Taipei City Administration. A question arose to distinguish the housing needs of the wheelchair user (contains 1.2% of population) from that of non-wheelchair seniors who although generally suffer from physical strength decline but still with adequate ability of mobility for living independently. A house that satisfies wheelchair users, inevitability require extended floor space which would cost the user at a considerable among of payment.
Two types of remodel housing layout with different floor planning and route arrangement were developed under the limited floor space. Suggestion of better facilities and accommodations were made to enhance the usability of the Public Rental Apartment. The result was examined by interviewing Universal Design experts following by detail improvement.

This research intended to improve channel switching operation that is the most frequently used function at a television remote controller. When surfing the channels, a pair of up/down keys (navigation key) are used on the television remote controller, while numeric keypad is used for the destination channel switching. In the pilot study, problems of using numeric keypad for channel switching were found, including error number operation and frequent shifting of vision focus between television screen and remote controller.
In order to improve the operation efficiency of channel switching, a pair of dedicated keys was utilized for fast channel switching. Two dedicated keys were set respectively near up/down keys (navigation key) and were design for the function of forward/backward 10 channels for every pushing down. A feasibility test was carried out to examine the dedicated keys’ operation efficiency and error rate against original numeric keypad. The results of experiment revealed that dedicated key operation performed less error rate than numeric keys did. Frequency of vision focus between television screen and remote controller was significantly reduced when using dedicated keys especially in the 40-60 age group. As a result, the proposed dedicated keys operation requires less cognitive effort which benefits older age group and all other users as well.
In addition, the concept of multi-layer interface was introduced to utilize a user friendly interface for both novice and expert users. The physical multi-layer interface of TV remote controller was design to hide most of infrequent used keys in the second layer, while 11 frequently used keys remained on the first layer. |

The Application of Honeycomb Paper on DIY Lamp Design

ABSTRACT
The idea of using recycled paper to make new useful products is commended as good sustainable practice. Recycled paper is also used for manufacture of hardboard, one of which is made use of concealed hexagonal structure of door panel. Furthermore, the cardboard filled in hexagonal structured paper gets more rigidness than the plastic panel filled in curved plastic layer. However, there isn’t till now any processed design work by using hexagonal structured paper. The motivation of this study is to make use of hexagonal structured paper for innovation of D.I.Y. lighting product design.
The first process of this study is to analyse the feature of hexagonal structured paper through field research and refered documents. The second is to conceive D.I.Y. lighting product design by developping its features such as lightness, transluscence, as well as variety of its modeling shape. Through the procedure of manufacture and experimental operation, two conclusions are described: (1) Lighting shape of hexagonal structured paper principally decided by structure layers and radial thickness. laiser cutting area and shape proportion. Integration and Simplicity of TV Channel Switching Interface

ABSTRACT :
This research intended to integrate and simply TV channel switching interface for easy use of all age groups. By identifying the problems of channel switching behavior, a highly usable remote switch interface was developed. With the concept of universal design theory and simplicity as the basis, we adopted a focus group approach to investigate the channel switching behavior of different groups and their need problems of using numeric keypad for channel switching. When users switch their focus between television screen and the remote control panel, they are likely to feel fatigue when accommodating the vision focus, especially for older adults. The experiment result revealed that rotary dialing operation performed lower error rate than numeric keys did, with no significant difference among all age groups. In addition, frequency of moving vision focus between television screen and remote controller was significantly reduced when using rotary dialing. The average number of focus movement when operating rotary dialing on the remote control was 5 times less than operating numeric keys, and reduced users’ cognitive load during channel switching. However, the rotary dialing operation requires more cognitive effort than numeric keys operations. As a result, the idea of a built-in application to facilitate the acceleration of rotary dialing may improve the operation efficiency.

Effect of Operation Guidance on Efficiency of Automatic Pay Station of Parking Lot

ABSTRACT :
汽車銷售量不斷攀升,消費者使用停車場機會增加。自助服務科技(SSTs)具有減少服務成本之特性(Meuter et al., 2000),已經成為停車場服務自動化之趨勢。台灣現有停車場自動繳費機種各不相同,使用者介面缺乏精確的引導,造成操作上的遲疑甚至失誤,也失去了自助服務科技之優勢。 操作自動繳費機的過程中,介面是產品與消費者溝通的橋樑,引導消費者直覺地、無誤地完成繳費作業。
本研究藉由文獻探討與現況觀察,將使用者介面之任務引導歸納出兩種模式:
(1)指向式符號引導,以螢幕顯示引導符號,迅速將使用者引導至正確操作位置;
(2)依照視覺動線理論配置操作元件,提供順序式的排列,讓操作更流暢。根據以上兩種符號引導模式進行操作績效比較驗證。
重要實驗結果說明如下:
(1)與現況介面相比,指向式符號引導與視覺動線引導皆顯著減少操作時間;
(2)不同環境光源顯著影響操作時間;
(3)有無時間壓力對各步驟操作時間有顯著影響。
(4)建議:在不改變現有機台之情況,可採用符號引導之方式;設計新式樣之機台,宜採用視覺動線 引導模式。

Coding Single LED Signal for Information Perception
單顆LED指示燈訊號呈現之認知編碼

ABSTRACT :
燈號在產品的人機互動中扮演著非常重要的角色;它傳遞產品的操作回饋、狀態告知或提示警示等重要訊息。由於產品屬性與品牌多,對於燈號編碼並無規範,造成使用者在認知上的混淆與記憶的負擔,若誤判燈號將造成機械損毀或人員損傷。因此,本研究針對單顆燈號探討使用者對燈號的認知與訊息傳達的合適性,以期能改善人機互動中的燈號編碼。
本研究主要分為三階段。第一階段為文獻探討與現有燈號蒐集,探討燈號構成要素有色燈、頻率與閃爍方式,並整理燈號之認知記憶及燈號現況相關文獻。第二階段,以前階段探討結果為基礎,聚焦於單顆燈號並以下列步驟重新編碼充電與加熱兩屬性燈號組,依序為(a)判斷產品屬性、(b)篩選狀態資訊、(c)進行色燈設定、(d)搭配頻率與閃爍方式。第三階段為燈號組驗證階段,透過符碼選用標效為實驗設計依據,規劃出閱讀說明書與否、預設匹配燈號正確與否等四種任務,分別驗證兩組燈號之匹配度與認識度。
經過數據整理與分析後結論為:(1)測試本研究燈號編碼,在狀態資訊與燈號之匹配度(matching effect)驗證中,無論是充電或加熱屬性產品燈號組,受測者平均正確率均接近九成,顯示本研究之燈號編碼足以改善傳統燈號編碼混亂的狀況;(2)受測者事先閱讀正確說明書與未閱讀說明書直接進行測驗,其燈號認知正確率差異不大(分別為91%與85%),顯示合適的燈號編碼即使不經過學習亦可直覺認知燈號含意。(3)受測者進行加熱屬性產品之燈號認知任務時所需時間長於充電屬性產品之燈號認知任務時間;顯示受測者解讀加熱屬性產品燈號時,更需費時思考燈號含意。建議設計加熱屬性產品或具危險性產品時,考慮加入更多輔助符碼(如聲音、文字標示等),以幫助使用者更清楚了解狀態資訊並且避免混淆。
